Washing Cashmere Sweaters

  • It is unwise to wash very long or very large sweaters or capes and none with silk or satin trimmings, bows etc.
  • Wash similar shades together, avoiding a mixture of light and dark colors.
  • Small ‘pills’ can be brushed off before washing using a nailbrush with gentle downward strokes.
  • Turn the sweater inside out having spotted any marks beforehand using liquid soap. For the machine use only Liquid Dreft or Liquid Dove but only use half the quantity that you would normally use. Never use a liquid containing bleach.
  • Place the sweaters in a mesh lingerie bag and close the zipper.
  • Wash in the machine on a cold or delicate cycle with a full spin dry. If the machine has a large capacity, wash the lingerie bag along with a towel or some other fabric to minimize friction.
  • When the cycle is complete take the sweaters out and leaving them inside out lay on a clean dry towel (on top of the dryer?). Pull the sweaters to shape so that they look like your sweaters before washing. They will dry in about twelve hours. Do not dry sweaters out of doors or near sunlight.
  • Press gently with a steam iron, still inside out, then turn to right side and press gently again.
  • You should now have restored your precious sweaters to their original pristine condition!
